On Tuesday, June 25, the City of Alameda hosted a public workshop and open house at the Main Library to discuss updates to its Climate Action and Resilience Plan (CARP), Local Hazard Mitigation Plan (LHMP), and Zero Waste Implementation Plan (ZWIP). This workshop was a testament to Alameda’s commitment to sustainability and resilience. It drew a diverse crowd of residents eager to learn about the City’s plans and provide input.
Climate Action and Resilience Plan (CARP): A Vision for a Sustainable Future
The CARP aims to reduce emissions to 50% below 2005 levels by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality as soon as possible. A key update to the CARP is its revised vision statement, which now emphasizes reducing disparities and environmental injustices experienced by socially vulnerable communities. The CARP team also outlined new goals and strategies for land use and transportation development, parking management, public transit service, micromobility, zero waste goods and services, and various municipal operations.
Local Hazard Mitigation Plan (LHMP): Preparing for the Future
Alameda’s LHMP is the city’s strategy for mitigating natural hazards and adapting to climate change. The LHMP team presented their progress on two near-term projects: Bay Farm Island/Veterans Court and the Oakland Alameda Estuary Projects. They outlined the upcoming phases of these projects, which include gathering community input on preliminary alternatives and developing long-term adaptation pathways.
Zero Waste Implementation Plan (ZWIP): Towards a Circular Economy
The ZWIP aims to divert 89% of materials from landfills by reducing, reusing, recycling, and composting. The City seeks community input to improve zero waste efforts through upcoming community meetings, focus group discussions, and a ZWIP survey.
Engaging the Community
The workshop included interactive activity stations where attendees could participate in discussions and activities related to the CARP, LHMP, and ZWIP. The enthusiastic engagement of the attendees demonstrates the strong community support for Alameda’s sustainability and resilience initiatives.
