Today is Juneteenth – an important day commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. While the Emancipation Proclamation had been issued over two years earlier, it took until this date in 1865 for the order to finally be enforced in Texas, freeing the last remaining enslaved people in this country.
Juneteenth is a cause for celebration –
a day to honor the ideals of freedom, justice and equality for all.
But it’s also a reminder that the road to making those ideals a reality has been long and extremely difficult. Even after abolition, Black Americans faced (and continue facing) oppression, discrimination and systemic barriers.
The fight for true equality goes hand-in-hand with economic empowerment and opportunity. Black entrepreneurs, businesses and communities have been vital drivers of progress. And that’s why this Juneteenth, we want to celebrate the rich diversity of Alameda’s business owners and workforce.
We’re lucky to have such an amazing mix of businesses run by people from all backgrounds and cultures here in Alameda. That diversity is a big part of what makes our city so vibrant and special. The Alameda Chamber & Economic Alliance is proud to represent businesses of all sizes, industries and ethnicities.
Having an inclusive, welcoming environment isn’t just the right thing for businesses – it’s good for the bottom line too. Studies show that companies embracing diversity see better financial performance, more innovative products, and a competitive edge for attracting top talent. Serving a diverse customer base opens up bigger market opportunities.
