Today is the first day of Mental Health Awareness Month and as the Voice of Business, we want to use this opportunity to have a candid conversation about the importance of mental health.
Taking care of your mental health is as important as taking care of your physical needs.
Why Does Mental Health Matter for Business?
More and more businesses are prioritizing mental health and for good reason. Mental health means:
- Stronger Teams: Employees who prioritize their mental well-being are more engaged and productive, and have improved problem-solving skills.
- Reduced Absenteeism: Supporting mental health can lead to lower employee absenteeism and presenteeism (being physically present but mentally checked out).
- Positive Company Culture: Creating a culture that openly discusses mental health fosters employee well-being and loyalty.
Actions You Can Take in Your Business
- Lead by Example: Normalize conversations about mental health and encourage employees to seek help if needed.
- Promote Resources: Share information about local mental health resources and Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) if available.
- Offer Flexible Work Options: Workplace flexibility can reduce stress and improve work-life balance for employees.
- Encourage Breaks and Time Off: Employees who take breaks and vacations return feeling refreshed and more focused.
- Organize Mental Wellness Events: Host workshops or seminars on stress management or mindfulness practices.
Many of us have experienced mental health challenges. You are not alone. By prioritizing well-being for ourselves, our loved ones, and our employees, we can create a more resilient and successful business community.
In the event of a mental health crisis, remember that resources in Alameda are available. The Alameda CARE Team (Community Assessment Response & Engagement) led by the Alameda Fire Department (AFD) provides a 24/7 alternative response to nonviolent individuals facing a mental health crisis.
How to Contact the Alameda CARE Team
If you are in crisis or see someone who may be in crisis:
-
- Call 911 or
- Call 510-337-8340 (police non-emergency line) and explain the situation to dispatchers. They will determine if the CARE Team is the appropriate response.
The CARE Team will arrive in a low-profile, program-branded vehicle. The team will assess the situation and help individuals navigate the best path forward in obtaining needed services.
