Building a Sustainable and Resilient Future for Alameda
As we step into 2025, the City of Alameda (and the Chamber) have committed to creating a sustainable and resilient future. The City needs our input! The City has released a draft of its Climate Action and Resiliency Plan (CARP), and it’s time for the business community to make their voices heard.
What is CARP?
CARP is a comprehensive plan that outlines strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, adapt to climate change, and build a more resilient community against current concerns like rising sea levels, extreme heat, and smoke/reduced air quality.
The plan covers a wide range of topics, including energy, transportation, land use, and waste management.
Why is CARP Important for Businesses?
A sustainable and resilient Alameda is essential for a thriving business environment today and in the future. Here’s why:
- Cost Savings: Investing in energy efficiency and renewable energy can lower operating costs for businesses.
- Attracting and Retaining Talent: Employees are increasingly looking to work for companies that prioritize sustainability.
- Brand Enhancement: Consumers are more likely to support businesses that are environmentally responsible.
- Resilience to Climate Change: Businesses need to be prepared for the impacts of climate change, such as sea level rise and extreme weather events.
How Can You Get Involved?

How is the Chamber Supporting CARP?
The Chamber is committed to supporting CARP and helping our members become more sustainable. Here are some of our initiatives:
- Leadership Alameda Class Project: This year’s Leadership Alameda class will continue last year’s class’ efforts in working on a project to help implement and publicize CARP.
- Workforce Development: We are partnering with the Peralta College system to develop training programs that will prepare workers for green jobs.
- Waste Reduction: We are committed to reducing waste at our events and in our office operations.
Alameda’s Waste Reduction Leadership
Alameda is already a regional leader in source reduction, recycling, and composting, with residents and businesses diverting 81% of their waste from the landfill. The Chamber is proud to be a part of this effort, and we encourage our members to continue to do their part to reduce waste.
Let’s Work Together
We believe that sustainability and resilience are essential for a thriving business community. We encourage all of our members to get involved in CARP and help shape the future of Alameda.
